The European Schoolnet in the framework of the European Commission’s ICT cluster has published a review of 17 studies of ICT impact on schools in Europe. The reviewed studies and surveys have been “… carried out at national, European and international level“. After the years of investment into ICT in schools this report tries to answer the question: “What does the research and evaluation tell us about the return on investment in ICT?” The review focuses on to major areas in regard of investments in schools: (1) learning outcomes and learners and (2) teaching methodologies and teachers. The findings are divided into more quantitative and qualitative based which I personally think is very useful since both of these research approaches deliver different results. For a condensed from of the research findings please refer to the pages 5 to 8 of the review.

Usually I search the Internet with Google and tend to forget that there are other search engines out there that might return better results as Google does. Don’t get me wrong, I personally belief that Google is a great search engine that uses a very good (and very secret) algorithm to return an answer to a request. But there are a lot more search engines out there that do a good job and might be more specific for what you’re looking for. Charles Knight a search engine optimizer just publishes a list of 100 alternative search engines at Read/WriteWeb. Maybe you want to reconsider your personal search strategy after reviewing this comprehensive listing.
In addition to the top 100 alternative search engines there are many variations of search engines out there. For instance Alltheweb.com is owned by Yahoo and uses their database but represents the results differently. A good tool to compare search results from Google, MSN, and Yahoo is the search comparison toll from Dogpile. The nice thing about this tool is that the results are displayed in a graphic which illustrates pretty good how different search results can be when you fire up the above mentioned search engines.

Once again is social networking in the Headlines. News.com from CNET just posted a special coverage taking on to review the year 2006. And guess what, social networking, Web 2.0, and more once again (see prior post on Time Magazine) are on the spot. The reviews range from headlines “social networking catches fire” over “Google shows Web 2.0 folks the money” till “Going mobile, in a big way“. I guess it is this time of the year to look back and reflect on what happened. All section of this series have an overview on the left site of the page and link to articles throughout the year that mark a step in the development in the featured field.Â
For those who are looking for a quick read-through on what happened in 2006 in the field of social networking, Web 2.0 and others should definitely stop by and browse through these reviews.
