Often I come across lists of free learning tools and those you have to pay for. However, they always produce a lot of retweets on Twitter. So here is a list of lists that refer to learning tools and in addition blogs that I came across:

Evidence-Based Practices in Online Learning

The U.S. Department of Education published in May 2009 a meta-analysis and review of online learning studies. Under evaluation were empirical studies published during the years 1996 till mid of 2008.

“The meta-analysis found that, on average, students in online learning conditions performed better than those receiving face-to-face instructions.“

Key findings have been nicely and straight to the point summarized by Donald Clark.

Networking for Opportunities

Steve Woodruff published a free available eBook that will give you some instructions on how to network in the age of web 2.0. The eBook with the title “Build Your Own Opportunity Network” is for beginners in this area and will guide you through what is available out there and how much time it will cost you to participate and network.

125 hours of math learning content

Being a Product Manager at scoyo (German production) is fun. It is even more fun ones one of your products launches completely. So here we go with 125 hours of learning objects in the subject matter mathematics for school children grades five to seven. Parts of it are available on the US platform already which is in open beta right now. Meaning you can register yourself for free and explore the content available over there.

The images in this post shows one set of characters in the math production, the pirates. There are plenty more so have a look for yourself and let me know how you like it.

History of “whatever”

I came across this great video capture (via @mattlingard) of a presentation at the Personal Democracy Forum 2009 held the keynote talk onthe 2nd day by Dr. Michael Wesch. He is an Assistant Professor of Cultural Anthropology and Digital Ethnography at the Kansas State University.

This presentation is very well done and in addition to the history of “whatever” there there are a lot of good thoughts in it. How will the next generation develop skills to be able to socially interact with each other when only or most of the time talking to a webcam sitting on the top of their computer screen? The future will let us know…

Baby Boomers & Generation X is so yesterday. Millennials are next!

I came across this very well put together video a little while ago. It is about the generation that is moving into power as you read this: Generation We.

In 2015 in America (I believe the U.S. that is) 74 Million people are considered to be part of the population group Baby Boomers. They have been born between 1946 – 1964. This group is followed by the Generation X which incorporated all those born between 1965 and 1977. In the eBook “Generation We” by Eric Greenberg with Karl Weber the Generation X group is considered “… a politically and socially conservative cohort that has struggled to define itself against the vast and dominant Boomer group it followed.” I this makes me part of this group. I never considered myself to struggle with my place in society nor feeling suppressed by my parents generation.. However, the new Generation are the Millennials born between the years 1978 till 2000. What this generation has to deal with and what their opportunities are is shown in the video below.

Eric Greenberg is using the online social networking to promote the Millennials as the Gen(eration) We and to activate members of this section of the population. This generation will be more diverse than any other before (White 63%, Hispanic 18%, Black 14%, Asian 5%).Their education is good and who would have guessed that, they will are also the most wired ones. All these facts and predictions are of interest when we take a look into online learning and the ease this generation is using technology in the educational field. Generation X needs to shape up to find the right ways to cater towards the next generations needs. a simple PowerPoint presentation based in a flash widget and maybe some underlying sound does not seem to be enough anymore. More so the opportunity for learners to interact with each other and the content itself while learning. Rearranging content while discussing and arguing for the right solution seems more the way to get cognitively involved than simply absorb some fixed and inflexible content.

I am in Hanover right now at the Educational Trade Fair (aka didacta) at our scoyo booth and do some promotion for our recently launched online learning platform in German for school children in age range from 6 till 14 years old. Is it time to change?

I haven’t been posting anything to this blog for over a year and three month. I think it is time for a change and get back on track and start blogging again what I am passionate about. Leaves the question, what is it that I am passionate about and want to blog about? Here is a list of things I want to post about in my blog:

eLearning (which ever version applies these days, I believe it is 2.0 right now)
cognitive psychology (cognitive and learning styles / types)
neuropsychology
educational technology
whatever else is of interest to me…

To manifest the state of change here at my blog I updated the theme today. I chose a clear and simple design since this is the way webdesign and its usability is heading towards in my opinion.

UPDATE: Apperently the first post had a little glitch. I couldn’t get rid of the letter ‘n’ in front of the poll I wanted to be displyed within the post using Democracy AJAX Poll verison 2.1. After trying for alomst 3 hours to find an answer to my problem. I canned the plugin and now I am happy to use WP-Polls verison 2.40 from Lester Chan. The downsite I haven’t figured out how to display a poll within a post. If you have an answer please leave a comment right here or send an email to webmaster@dstaemmler.info.
