One year of Google WiFi in Mountain View, CA

The official Google Blog reports on the first year anniversary of the free available WiFi Network in Mountain View, CA the home of Google. The 400+ mesh routers are being used by 15.000 unique users every month that use roughly 300GB each day of network traffic.

Sine I am living in San Francisco I hope that the effort of Google and Earthlink will bring the free WiFi access to the city. To push this initiative forward people living in San Francisco can contact the Board of Supervisors.

Meraki is another project that tried to encourage existing WiFi network owners to open up their network for others. You can sign up and plug in a so called Meraki repeater that configures itself to extend the freely available network. Meraki is backed by Google and Sequoia Capital and has been initially a Ph.D. research project at MIT.
