Happy New Year

I am in Hamburg, Germany right now and celebrate New Year’s Eve with friends of mine. 2006 has been an interesting and challenging year for me because I relocated at the end of 2005 to San Francisco. I am looking forward to the upcoming challenges in 2007 in my work and private life.

Here are some impressions from Erfurt, Germany where I spent Christmas this year.

Learning Styles and Interactive Learning Programs

Cognitive Components of Learning Outcome within Virtual Learning Environments – Abstract
thesis book coverThe objective of this study is to examine the influence of hypermedia systems with different levels of interactivity upon the learning outcome of users with different learning styles. For this purpose, the areas of educational media and differential cognitive psychology have been combined. On one hand, interactive learning objects within hypermedia systems were researched with regards to their learning efficacy. Two learning programs with different levels of interactivity were used. On the other hand, users’ individual learning preferences were surveyed in terms of their learning styles.

To determine the individual learning style, an inventory based on Kolb’s Learning Style Inventory and the Learning Style Questionnaire from Honey & Mumford was developed. Psychometric properties were examined using a sample size of 191 students. Internal consistency of the alpha coefficients ranged from satisfactory to good. Empirical evidence of the construct validity could not be reported.

In an experimental study with a sample size of 84 students enrolled in public health, nursing and nutrition, and home economics courses at the University of Applied Sciences Hamburg was conducted. The influence of hypermedia systems with different levels of interactivity on the learning outcome of users with different learning styles was investigated. A general linear model with repeated measurement was chosen for the examination. Additionally, questionnaires were used to survey previous knowledge, learning outcome and learning styles.

The results demonstrate that learning took place regardless of the levels of interactivity and learning style. Users with a diverging learning style reached higher scores with a low level of interactivity. Subjects with an assimilating learning style achieved, though not significantly, a higher learning outcome in the learning program with higher interactivity. Users with a converging learning style tended to obtain a higher learning outcome with lower interactivity. Subjects with an accommodating learning style tended to achieve a higher learning outcome in the learning program with higher interactivity.

Software Freedom Law Center doubts Blackboard Patent

The Software Freedom Law Center (SFLC) filed a formal request with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for re-examination of Blackboard’s e-Learning patent (received in January 2006). If the request will be successful 44 claims of the patent will be canceled. The USPTO know has three month to decide upon the request and any action steps that may follow. If the patent is not going to be revoked Blackboard will have the monopole for software application that make a distinction between the roles of teachers and students.

The full version of the re-examination request is available form the SFLC website.

BayCHI Monthly Program: December 12

BayCHI Logo Today I’m going to the PARC (Palo Alto Research Center) where the monthly BayCHI program meeting takes place. This month program features Sean Kane, Director of User Interface Engineering at Netflix. He is presenting a case study about the development of a great user interface. This should be very interesting since Netflix is the world’s largest DVD rental service and a lot of other online DVD rental companies try to catch up with them, e.g. Blockbuster. The second half of the program is about “How do people use search engines?”. Daniel M. Russel, senior research scientist at Google, will be there to elaborate on how the use of multiple kinds of data can be used to understand what people do when searching.

Before the program I am volunteering to coordinate the pre-program dinner which is held at the Kan Zeman Restaurant in Palo Alto. This is a great opportunity to meet the speakers before the talk and get a chance to get them, and other participants to know.

MyBlogLog to keep track

MyBlogLog Logo

Mybloglog.com is a nice tool to keep track of who is interested in the same sites and topics you’re interested in. If you happen to have your own blog you can post a snipped of code into your blog and readers will see who else is browsing and reading your blog. I like it because it is connecting people with same or similar interests. Isn’t that what Web 2.0 is all about?

Update (09/01/07): MyBLogLog has been acquired by Yahoo for around $10 Million. (received via paidContent.org)
